Signs You May Need Your Wisdom Teeth Extracted

Find out if any dental changes may be warning you that it’s time to get your wisdom teeth out.

Around the time we reach our late teens our third set of molars start to come in. These teeth can often cause more harm than good for wisdom teethmany patient’s smiles. But don’t worry, our Chico, CA dentist won’t take your wisdom away— just those pesky teeth. Find out more about why wisdom teeth often need to be removed so you know when to turn to us.

Wisdom teeth usually start to come in between the ages of 17 and 21. While there are some people who are fortunate enough to have wisdom teeth that come in healthy and in the proper position, in most cases wisdom teeth cause a variety of dental problems:

  • Your wisdom teeth may be impacted, meaning that they only partially erupt through the gums. Leaving the gums open can cause food and bacteria to get trapped back there and lead to an infection.
  • Wisdom teeth often come in crooked and can put pressure on other healthy teeth.
  • Sometimes there isn’t enough space in the jaw to have room for your wisdom teeth. This is another reason for impacted wisdom teeth.
  • If your smile is already a bit crowded, having your wisdom teeth come in may only make alignment issues worse. And if you’ve already had braces to fix your smile then you certainly don’t want to screw up your straight smile.

So, how do you know if your wisdom teeth are causing your issues? If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then it’s time to call our Chico, CA general dentist:

  • Jaw pain
  • Pain or tenderness on or around the wisdom teeth
  • Swelling, pain or a cyst in the gums
  • Tooth decay in neighboring teeth (this usually happens if the wisdom tooth is putting pressure on the tooth, making it more difficult to clean in between)

It’s usually between 17 to 25 years old that people will start to notice issues with their wisdom teeth and need them removed. Coming in every six months for routine cleanings and once a year for x-rays will ensure that we monitor your wisdom teeth before they cause serious issues.

If you have questions about the health of your wisdom teeth then it’s time you called our Chico, CA dental office. Turn to the dental experts at Philadelphia Square Dental Care.
